Summer in EDU…a time to refresh and set goals for Fall and beyond.

It’s the beginning of June and the majority of College’s and Universities have completed the school year. Commencement is over. Student and faculty have departed and it’s a bit quieter across campus. What’s an EDU marketer to do? First, we hope everyone will get some time off and enjoy the warm weather. Second, it is likely a time when senior staff will be asking: “What’s Next”? The pressure on EDU marketers is greater today than ever when it comes to the growing competition for prospective students. These students are different than the students that were being recruited even a few years ago: they are constantly connected to their phone and each...

Why EDU Marketers Should Read Mary Meekers Presentation On Internet Trends

Mary Meeker is a well known Analyst who works for Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, a leading Silicon Alley Venture Capital Firm. She became well known for predicting the DotCom bust in the early 2000's. Each year she presents her thoughts on "Internet Trends" to great anticipation. This year was no exception, with her presenting her findings at the AllThingsDigital D11 Conference to great fan fare. The presentation covers a broad range of topics (Global Growth, China's explosive growth, Mobile, and many others) that predict the important issues that all industries -- but especially those that leverage and live in the digital realm -- must pay attention to. So what does that have...

Observations from the #JBoye13 EDU Digital Conference

I attended the JBoye13 EDU Digital Conference (@jboye) in Philadelphia last week. There is a nice Storify page that summarizes some of the best Tweets from the conference: http://storify.com/janusboye/reflections-on-j-boye-philadelphia-13 A few observations...opinions only my own: The best EDU session of the day was by Robert Goldberg from Drexel University. I was particular interested is seeing Bob talk as I've admired the Drexel site for some time, especially their wonderful design and approach to Responsive Design. Bob did a great job outlining how Drexel has leveraged it's brand platform of "City as Campus" both visually and with engaging content. Drexel did it right:...

    New Site For MDRC

MDRC is a non-profit public policy think tank, that does a lot of great research about things like education challenges for under served populations, challenges with low-income families and unemployment -- many issues that don't get a lot of attention, but are perhaps among the most important to create a healthy future for all Americans. We're proud that we've had a chance to contribute to making their presentation of information so much better. This project has been around for a long time - we got started in early 2011 - and we've been working for some time to create a really impactful website that would deliver the important content that MDRC creates. As for the design, take a...

Brand is often the forgotten issue when it comes to .edu marketing

There's an awful lot being discussed these days in regard to the marketing of a University or College. Pinterest: http://targetx.com/facebook-without-the-whining/ Facebook: http://www.eduniverse.org/facebooks-new-feature-groups-oberlin All good subjects (and including others, such as the use of online video,  other social media platforms to recruit and retain, etc.) and it's important that institutions pay attention to the ever evolving landscape. Often what gets lost in the swirl of all of the new media platforms available to .edu marketers is in fact the most important issue: your school's brand. What is your school's unique proposition? Digital Pulp And Ocean Conservancy…Keeping Our Ocean Healthy

It’s not often we get to do good while creating good work. Digital Pulp’s goal was to take all of the good work that Ocean Conservancy does (and too often unnoticed) and make that work tangible and emotive. The imagery and content helps the audience remember how much the ocean meant to them as a child…and gives them an emotional urge to help preserve it so their children can...

    GE and Instagram

We LOVE the way GE is using Instagram to make their products (and the use of their products) look cool. Will Instagram's integration into Facebook affect how marketers will use the platform? If Facebook is smart they will not take away a brand or individual's ability to use Instagram regardless of their relationship with Facebook. Time will tell. In the meantime, click on this link to enjoy more great GE shots: http://web.stagram.com/n/generalelectric/

    Forbes.com…nice job.

We noticed recently that Forbes.com did a redesign of it's site. It's surprisingly simple and elegant for a mass-market publication site. The "Real Time" section is quite cool, giving you updates when new content (either published or commented) is added. Nice job.
