Columbia Mailman School of Public Health

A clear path to the gold standard in global health.

The Challenge

Though Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health is a distinguished leader in public health education, its website didn’t communicate its value as the gold standard. Its educators needed to showcase a newly redesigned core curriculum; its fundraisers needed to demonstrate the vital need for support for key programs on a local, national and global level. All of it needed to be seamless for a wide range of users—prospective students, current professors, public health professionals, and the general public—to navigate, and easy for site administrators to update.

The Solution

We reimagined the site completely, streamlining the main navigation and implementing a scalable site architecture that included flexible templates to bring microsites for the school’s related institutions under one umbrella. The responsive web design allows for bright, arresting showcases for stories and news that illustrate how the Mailman community creates change both within the institution and on the ground worldwide—and gives a prominent platform to the school’s accomplished and charismatic dean. A new Drupal 7 CMS allows logical back-end tagging for a filtered content experience.

The Result

By amplifying their global outreach with urgently needed education and research, the Mailman School of Public Health has changed how people see public health education. The relaunched site puts that high profile and those specific accomplishments front and center. It attracts and informs applicants and project funders while also serving its internal community and the public through bespoke content, all easily filtered for individual interests and needs. Site administrators are comfortable in the CMS and keep the content fresh and relevant.
